RHINO Forum on Gender and Routine Health Information Systems

by on July 10, 2015

Join the Routine Health Information Network (RHINO) online July 14 – 22 for an engaging discussion on collecting, analyzing and using sex-disaggregated and gender-sensitive data from routine health information systems (RHIS) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). RHINO works to strengthen the role of evidence-based decision making by engaging organizations and professionals in promotion of effective collection and use of routine health information.

Why this topic matters

Gender-related issues permeate culture and its institutions, often leading to health inequities. It has long been observed that gender-related factors, such as expressed norms about men’s and women’s roles, women’s autonomy, spousal relationship quality, and intimate partner violence impact health outcomes everywhere in the world. These outcomes include the risk of HIV, access to all types of health care, family planning use, and those related to maternal and child health.

To correct and guard against the inequitable influences of gender norms on health, public health information systems must identify sex-specific trends and provide information needed to eliminate inequities. Gender-related information provides evidence to raise awareness of gender imbalances, advocate for change, address gender dimensions of health, and monitor progress.

What we’ll be discussing

In this online forum, we hope to hear about your experiences with integrating gender into routine health information systems, types of information generated from sex-disaggregated and gender-sensitive data, and how these data have been used to create change.
